Barcelo, la catedral baix la mar
Very beautiful catalogue showing in texts and images the realization of Miquel Barcelo at the Sant Pere's chapel of the cathedral of Mallorca to which Barcelo devoted three years. The artist carried out 300 square meters of mural ceramics to decorate the chapel. The catalogue shows the development of this immense ceramic fresco (realized in Italy in the workshop of Vincenzo Santoriello, at the village of Vietri sul Mare, then transported in Mallorca). Barcelo had worked before on a similar space to the church Santa Eulalia dei Catalani of Palermo. For this monumental work, where Miquel Barcelo chose topics referring to the Gospel of John - the miracle of the bread and fish for example -, one needed 150000 kilos of clay, 2000 kilos of enamels and 1500 iron clamps were necessary to hold the work in the chapel. The dimensions of the chapel are 25 meters high, 8 metres wide and 12 metres deep. The project designed by Barcelo covers the whole area like a terra cotta and the result is impressive. The catalogue shows all the stages of creation as well as the final result. Barcelo conclude : "A cathedral can be better than a museum. A work of art will be always in good company there. Art was discovered in the churches. They are places for the spirit, with none of the commercial show of the museums ". Back
